Tax Reform – VAT

The Minister of Finance, Vincent Van Peteghem, has presented his tax reform project, which includes, among other points, the harmonization of the reduced VAT rate on January 1, 2024.

While the standard rate remains at 21%, he proposes replacing the current rates of 6% and 12% with a single rate of 9%, except for water, gas, and electricity, which would retain the current rate of 6%.

Furthermore, a 0% rate would be applied to:

  • Vegetables and fruits
  • Medicines
  • Diapers
  • Feminine hygiene products
  • Public transportation

The 9% rate would be applied to (non-exhaustive list):

  • Bread
  • Meat
  • Dairy products
  • Biscuits
  • Sodas
  • Fish
